MORE GAME WITHIN GAME

MORE ON THE GAME WITHIN THE GAME

Wesley Wolverine junior #18 C Nina Marcano (Middletown, DE)

"Despite softball rules against leading off (a base), a base stealer can get from first to second in as little as 3 seconds. On average, a softball catcher must react 1/10 of a second faster than her major league counterpart."
– ESPN Sports Science

Wesley Wolverine junior #18 C Nina Marcano (Middletown, DE)
fires down to senior #22 C/INF Morgan Seymour (Smyrna, DE)
to easily catch the runner at second base. Senior #6 MI
Breanna Hartman (Red Bank, NJ) rushes to back up the play.

You better have a strong, accurate arm for any chance
of catching Wesley Wolverine sophomore #4 MI/OF
Samantha Burns (Magnolia, DE) on the base paths!

DODGE & BUBBLEBALL

Fun evening off campus
Softball and lacrosse squads meet
on dodgeball & bubbleball courts!

It has become a tradition.

Two years ago, the Wesley Wolverine softball team challenged Women's Lacrosse to a kickball contest on a chilly evening under the lights at Scott D. Miller Stadium. Last year, the competition moved inside for a volleyball game at Wentworth Gymnasium.

This year, last night, November 3, the two were at it again. This time it was a doubleheader off campus at an indoor athletic training facility -- Impact Sports, Dover, DE – featuring two non-traditional collegiate games of dodgeball and, what turned out to be a wild collision match, not unlike bumper cars, called bubbleball soccer.

Bubbleball wraps a large, single-chamber inflatable sphere around a player that, by its sheer bulk, immediately challenges both an athlete's balance and agility. For those unfamiliar with it, the bubble wrap can be better understood by viewing the photos in the slideshow and video below.

The dodgeball game also was fast and furious, played with soft, air-filled rubber balls flying back and forth between the two sides.

BELOW ARE 70 PHOTOS of both events in a slideshow format...

BELOW IS A VIDEO of the bubbleball soccer game. (The softball team is in black and Lacrosse is in red. Can you identify the individual young women in the bubble spheres? It's tough to do!)

LEADERSHIP

Below, summary from the Liberty Mutual's PlayPositive series.CLICK HERE for the full story.

LEADERSHIP IN SPORTS: THE THREE C’S

Sports psychologists Larry Lauer PhD and Kevin Blue identified The Three C’s of being a captain: CARING, COURAGEOUS AND CONSISTENT. Successful captains have not just a passion for the game, but a passion and care for their teammates...

TWO OF TEAM'S FIVE CAPTAINS: Wesley Wolverines
senior #6 MI Breanna Hartman (Red Bank, NJ)
and junior #18 C Nina Marcano (Middletown, DE).
C’S FOR EVERYONE

… influence, authority and the ability to lead others can come from the bottom of the ranks as easily as the top.

Leadership doesn’t always have to mean 'taking charge' … you can become a natural leader and teacher. You can provide the coaching, instruction, insight and support...

And being an introvert doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader… when the person who rarely talks decides to say something... everyone listens...

STEP UP

When athletes step up and embrace leadership – even without the Captain’s C – teams get better. By encouraging athletes to seize the opportunities for leadership, both the team and the player achieve more.”

CORE TRAINING

From Coach Marc
Core Training More

Important Than Ever

The good thing about 'core training', unlike many other trends, it has NOT gone away even after many years. It has stood the test of time and has become a very important part of sports conditioning programs today.

Wesley Wolverine freshman
#10 MI Kasey Fry (Milford, DE)

This was recently confirmed by a brief review – a summary of research findings about a topic – published in the highly respected Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research about the applications of core training to sports conditioning programs a little over a year ago.

Wesley Wolverine freshman
#2 OF Kateri Peters
(Havre DeGrace, MD)

According to it, we can, without a doubt, affirm that core training is crucial to maximize sports performance. Science backs this up.

On the softball field, core training means pitching faster, hitting with more power, throwing harder, and moving more quickly.”
